Zambia Police spokesperson Rea Hamoonga says 20 people died in road accidents that happened during the new year period.
In a statement issued yesterday, Hamoonga stated that the country recorded a total of 166 road accidents which resulted in 20 people dying.
“January 2, 2025-The Zambia Police Service wishes to inform the public of the road traffic accident statistics recorded during the New Year period of 2025. A total of 166 road traffic accidents were recorded nationwide, a significant reduction compared to the 262 accidents recorded during the same period in 2024,” Hamoonga stated. “Summary of Road Traffic Accidents Fatal Accidents: 15 fatal accidents resulting in 20 fatalities (compared to 16 fatal accidents with 16 fatalities in 2024). The figures show a slight decrease by One fatal road traffic accidents and an increase in persons killed by four.”
Hamoonga stated that Lusaka Province had the highest number of road accidents with 60 followed by Copperbelt at 38, then followed by Central 14, Southern 12, North Western 10, Muchinga and Eastern 9 each, Western 8, Northern 5, Luapula 1.
Hamoonga further stated that the police collected K631,150.00 in admission of guilty fees.
On a positive note, Hamoonga stated that there was a reduction in the number of road traffic accidents this year compared to last year.
He attributed the reduction to the measures that the Zambia police had implemented among them “routine patrols in accident prone areas” and “comprehensive road safety awareness across all provinces” among other measures.
