Witchdoctor nabbed for causing juveniles to drink mixture of snake, graveyard soil concoction

Police in Chilanga have detained a 21-year-old traditional doctor for giving three juveniles a drinking concoction made out of boiling soil collected from the grave yard, a head of a snake and a shoelace, on the pretext that they will win any fights.

And Police in Lusaka have detained Humphrey Kasemene  and John Mangemba of  unknown house numbers in Matero Township for aggravated robbery committed on  December 6, 2023 around 14:45 hours on Roan Road in Kabulonga.

In a statement, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that James Mumba of plot 7A/1U Water Works area in Chilanga is alleged to have given charms to three boys aged 10, 2 and 11 on the pretext that they will have power to win any fight. 

Hamoonga stated that on December 6, 2023 at 13:00 hours, the police received a report from four parents that a man known as James Mumba of Water Works area in Chilanga, a traditional doctor, gave some charms to the four boys.

He stated that this occurred on December 1, 2023 around 16:00 hours at the Water Works area in Chilanga. 

“Brief facts of the matter are that on November 30, 2023 around 16:00 hours, the suspect engaged the four boys at his house to remove grass in his yard and never agreed the amount to pay them. After the boys did the work, the suspect told the boys to come to his house the following day for payments. The following day, on December 1, 2023 at around 16:00 hours when the boys went to get  their money, the suspect told them that he will not give them money but power to use when fighting. He instructed the boys to go to the graveyard and pick some soil from a fresh grave and come with a shoelace each,” read the statement in part. “The boys did that and the traditional doctor made some charms by boiling the soil, shoelaces and the head of a snake. Then he put the liquid charm in three bottles and gave the boys instructions that in the morning they should drink a bit of it and when bathing should pour in bathing water for five days.” 

Hamoonga stated that the boys followed the instructions for two days then later stopped.

He stated that one of the parents was informed by his 10 year old son over the issue.

“Then he immediately got three other boys, two aged 11 and another aged 13. He later also engaged the other parents and reported the matter to police. Police visited the scene of crime and recovered some of the charms which will be taken to the food and drug Laboratory at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) for a toxicology examination, while the children were taken to the Clinic for a medical checkup,” Hamoonga stated. He also stated that investigations have revealed that the boy 13 was not given the charms for he went late and was asked to go the following day adding that police have continued investigating the matter.

In a related development, Police in Lusaka have detained Kasemene and Mangemba for aggravated robbery.

Hamoonga stated that the duo are alleged to have committed the offence yesterday December 6, 2023 at around 14:45 hours along Roan Road in Kabulonga.

He stated that this followed after Alex Bupe 25 of unknown house number “D” section in Mutendere compound reported that as he was walking along Roan Road towards Kabulonga shopping mall,  a Toyota mark X black in colour came from behind and hit him with a side view mirror.

“Thereafter, one of the two occupants came out of the car and forcefully grabbed his cell phone S9 valued at K1, 200=00. The car then sped off but fortunately, a few meters away from the scene, the vehicle lost control and went into the drainage, the victim then called for help and members of the public helped in apprehending the two occupants and recovered the stolen phone.

The suspects were taken to the Kabulonga police post. Later on, Police officers from the flying squad rushed to the scene where the said vehicle with two number plates with BAB 3391 placed on top of BLA 9253 was retrieved. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing,” stated Hamoonga.
