Police say the tragic road accident that occurred on Great East Road at Marshlands area in Lusaka, was due to excessive speed of the Hilux which lost control and veered into the opposite lane, thereby colliding head on with a truck.
In a statement police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga stated that yesterday Manda Hill police responded to a tragic road traffic accident at approximately 15-20 hours.
He stated that individuals who were involved in the accident had been identified as Francis Mushole 39, of Matero Township, a driver of a Man Diesel truck with registration number GRZ 370CV, belonging to the Ministry of Health.
The police spokesperson stated that the front part of the vehicle sustained extensive damage.
He stated that the other victim was identified as Mubanga Mwamba Francis, 23 years of Makeni Bonaventure in Lusaka who was driving a Toyota Hilux with registration number ALZ 7676.
Hamoonga stated that the entire vehicle suffered extensive damage, and unfortunately Francis died.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the Toyota Hilux, moving from East (Chelston) to West (leading into Town), lost control due to excessive speed. As a result, the vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the Man Diesel truck, which was approaching from the opposite direction,” Hamoonga stated.
He stated that emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene but despite their swift response, Francis was pronounced dead on arrival.
He stated that the police are working diligently to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Hamoonga also reminded the public to adhere to traffic regulations and exercise caution on the roads to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
He stated that the police extended its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Francis during this difficult time, while the investigation into this fatal road traffic accident was ongoing, and updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
