Energy minister Peter Kapala has appointed former Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) president James Banda as the new Energy Regulation Board (ERB) board chairperson.
Banda who served as vice-chairperson, has replaced Reynolds Bowa who was dismissed from his job early this month.
After Bowa was dismissed, the director general Yohane Mukabe proceeded on forced leave.
Bowa confirmed to Daily Revelation that he was no longer the board chairperson and the decision to terminate his contract was communicated to him on May 3, 2024.
He said he did not know why his employment contract was terminated but this decision was made after the ERB announced the controversial increased electricity tariffs by ERB.
The government said ERB did not consult it before making the announcement which was received with mixed feelings.
In a press statement yesterday, ERB announced that Banda had replaced Bowa following the revocation of his appointment.
The newly appointed board chairperson has served in the legal profession with a focus in construction and energy law for over 25 years and holds both local and International acclaim.
Banda is the past president of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) lawyers association and chartered Institute of Arbitrators Zambia Branch.
He is also a qualified arbitrator and is certified by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Banda also serves as commissioner of the Small Claims Court in Zambia.
