The Free Press Initiative (FPI) has condemned Mafinga member of parliament Robert Chabinga’s threats to close down or liquidate any media house that provides coverage to Miles Sampa as leader of PF.
And FPI has urged Chabinga to retract his threats and engage the media in a manner that reflects the respect and responsibility expected of a public leader.
In a statement, FPI founder Joan Chirwa stated that Chabinga’s remarks represented a significant threat to press freedom in Zambia.
Chirwa stated that the situation was aggravated by Chabinga’s role as receivership manager in the liquidation of The Post Newspaper, and his self-proclaimed status as a “liquidation specialist.”
“These threats are not only alarming but also a direct affront to the principles of freedom of the press and freedom of expression, which are cornerstones of a democratic society. It is through constructive and respectful dialogue that we can ensure a free, fair, and democratic society for all Zambians,” she stated.
Chirwa stated that Chabinga should uphold the independence and integrity of the media rather than attempting to manipulate and intimidate it for personal or political gain.
“The role of journalists is to inform the public accurately and impartially, adhering to their editorial policies and ethical standards. In the context of political disputes, the media’s duty is to provide a balanced platform for all parties involved, ensuring that the public receives a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand,” she stated
She stated that the use of intimidation tactics against the media undermined the very foundation of democracy
and discredited Chabinga’s leadership.
“Such actions raise serious concerns about his capability to lead a political party or manage public affairs. FPI calls upon all media associations, civil society organizations, and the Zambian government to condemn Chabinga’s threats in the strongest terms possible,” she stated.
Chirwa stated that it was imperative to send a clear message that such behavior was unacceptable and would not be tolerated.
“We urge journalists and media owners to stand firm and continue their essential work without fear of retribution. The media plays a pivotal role in safeguarding democracy, and its freedom to operate without bias or intimidation is crucial,” Chirwa stated.
She stated that FPI would continue to monitor this situation closely and would take all necessary steps to support and protect media freedom in the country.
“We remain dedicated to building the capacity of journalists and ensuring that they can operate in an environment free from threats,” stated Chirwa.
