Civil Service Commission chairperson Dr Choolwe Beyani has announced that the commission will not call for fresh applications for the recruitment of 4,000 health workers this year, but will pick from those that applied last year and were not picked.
Speaking at Cabinet Office on Friday during a press briefing, Dr Beyani said in order to save costs, the commission would not call for fresh applications.
He said it would instead get from the 43,000 that applied last year.
“You may wish to know that from the advertisement that was published last year, 2023 for the 3,000 health workers, a total of 46,000 applications were received through the post office in various districts across the country,” he said.
“The commission therefore, thought it wise not to call for fresh applications in 2024. But instead, use the 43,000 application for last year. This will save on time and administrative costs on the part of the government, as well as all the aggregated costs to the applicants, including the difficulties that our brothers and sisters with disabilities experience when making applications.”
Dr Beyani added that even though it would disadvantage the new graduates, the commission had made the decision to save costs and time on the part of the government.
Dr Beyani further said the recruitment would be divided in two phases, which would involve promotion of officers to high positions, while the second phase would involve the appointment of new entrants into public service.
“Phase 1: The promotion of officers to higher positions. This is intended to motivate existing serving officers who have been in the same position for many years. To this end, l am glad to announce that phase 1 has been completed. And a total of 1,522 officers in the ministry of health have been promoted to higher positions,” Dr Beyani said.
“Having successfully completed the first phase of the recruitment, the commission has commenced the recruitment of the second phase, which is the appointment of new entrants into public service.”
Dr Beyani said the process of recruitment was expected to be completed by the second week of December this year.
