Founder Pioneer Influence Kasote Singogo has called on President Hakainde Hichilema and former president Edgar Lungu not seek elections in 2026 as the country is not short of leaders.
And Singogo has stated that the comeback of a political leader who has been in office before is possible given the experience in Mauritius and other countries.
In an article relating to political alliances in Zambia, Singogo stated that Zambia could not fail to find a leader from the 20 million plus population.
“Zambia is now 60 years old. There is no shortage of leaders and these leaders can come from any part of Zambia,” he stated. “Leadership is stewardship for and on behalf of God on one hand and the citizenry on the other hand. Leadership is not about fixing others it is about developing a country for the good of all citizens.”
He stated that his response was anchored on the past electoral goings on in selected countries namely Malawi, Kenya, Mauritius, and Botswana.
Singogo stated that in Botswana a shock result saw the ruling party which had ruled for nearly six decades losing an election to 54 year old Boko of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), wrestling power from BDP Botswana Democratic Party with a landslide result.
He also stated that in Malawi the United Transformation Movement and Malawi Congress party represented an example of a successful alliance which removed a ruling party from government.
“In Kenya we have seen political party alliances built from 2002 to 2022, on the back of KANU’s dissolution which was a dominant political party. It is the nature of these Kenyan alliances from 2002 to 2022 which one can use to make a healthy commentary on the alliances in Zambia,” he stated. “One cannot miss the fact that the nature of Kenyan political alliances have been transient and have been driven by immediate electoral goals rather than enduring ideological commitments. The fluid nature of these alliances is worrying because they are sustained only as long as they serve the interests of members.”
Singogo stated that internal conflicts and personal interest frequently led to fragmentation, promoting the formation of new alliances aimed at better fulfilling individual ambitions at the expense of enduring political success.
He stated that recently in Mauritius the former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam who served from 1995 to 2000, and again from 2005 to 2014 returned to power.
Singogo stated that the current Prime Minister Jugnauth conceded defeat before all results were announced saying his Militant Socialist Movement Coalition was headed for defeat.
“With this background, a commentary can be made on TONSE and UKA. Before TONSE was formed most of the political parties in TONSE were in UKA. Internal conflicts and personal interest led to fragmentation, promoting the formation of other alliances aimed at better fulfilling individual ambitions at the expense of enduring political success. With the formation of TONSE, one cannot miss the comments emerging from leaders in other alliances belittling the TONSE alliance,” read the write in up in part.
Given the factors tabulated above, he concluded that surprise electoral outcomes were possible such as the one seen in Botswana.
He stated that alliance feuds were normal and tended to smoothen out as elections got nearer and nearer.
Singogo also said the timing of an alliance was a critical factor in winning an election from a ruling party.
“In the Zambian situation my view is that both ECL and HH should not seek elections in 2026 we need a NEW leader who will emerge beyond the political feuds currently going on,” stated Singogo.
