‎‎A Govt of ‘frightened little men’ is stopping opposition from campaigning – Saki‎

United Liberal party leader Sakwiba Sikota says the UPND government is a failed one.

In an interview on Monday, Sikota said the UPND government was a government of “frightened little men”, saying this was the reason it was not allowing the opposition political parties to freely campaign.

‎”And that is why they are trying as hard as possible to stop the message from the opposition getting out there. But, the Zambian people do see, and they’re going to vote out this government. Very clearly it is a failed government,” Sikota said. “It is failing even to run a fair democratic campaign. Look at the press, the state media! The opposition is not allowed to be there. Only frightened little men go to such an extent, as to even stop the opposition from appearing in the public media. That is what we have. We have a government of frightened little men.”

Sikota said the UPND knew that it had lost popularity among the Zambian people, arguing that was the reason they were panicking through early campaigns as they prevented the opposition from doing the same.

“It shows very clearly that he and his party are panicking, and they have no confidence in themselves. That is why they are seeking to campaign and stop others from campaigning,” Sikota said. “Only people who lack confidence do that. And there is a good reason they lack confidence. It is because they know they have failed the Zambian people.”

‎And Sikota condemned the detention of Mporokoso member of parliament (MP) Brian Mundubile by the Zambia police last week.

He stressed that the overnight detention of Mundubile was “terribly” wrong.

“But, what l said, is still valid. The point is that it he never have been detained in the first place. If they had, all they wanted to do was question him. Why not question him in the day, not detaining overnight? That is totally wrong. Because, they didn’t formally arrest him. So why detain him overnight in the cells?” said Sikota. “And then also initially not allowing the lawyers access. That is terribly wrong. And when you write to the UN, Human Rights watch and other people, talking about our human rights records, they complain to say ‘no,no we got a good record.’ You can’t have a good record when you are doing things of that nature.”
