The Holy Bible in the Book of Genesis Chapter 4:8-13, gives an account where one brother Cain killed his own brother Abel. The two were children of the first man and woman God made, Adam and Eve respectively.
After Cain had killed his brother and God inquired from him where his brother was, he showed no remorse over what he had done.
In Verse 9, the Lord asked him, “Where is your brother Abel?”
”I don’t know,” replied Cain. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Then Verse 10, the Lord said, ‘What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
That Bible account talks about death, where one human being took the life of another. What should be placed on record is that a human being is God’s most treasured possession, and He always demands justice whenever it comes to his most treasured possession.
Even the earthy institutions and existence have man as their most treasured resource. Someone can kill an animal for instance and nothing much will be talked about, but kill a human being and see how the state will come tumbling down on you like a ‘tonne of bricks.’ That’s how special a human being is.
Today we are talking about the death of ex-Transport minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, whose remains were put to rest over the weekend in his former constituency of Lunte, Northern Province, which he served as member of parliament for 10 years. Those with a conscience have seen how emotionally battering this death has been on his wife, children, family, Church, friends and the wider community.
This death happened under circumstances that are being contested. Opposition leader Brian Mundubile, who is under incarceration over treason charges, said he saw his late friend being killed by the security wings at his residence on August 14, 2026 – an account which was first denied by the government through permanent secretaries Thabo Kawana, Dr Dickson Matembo and Dr Mambo Hamaundu. However, the Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa, security wings and the President Hakainde Hichilema later came out and talked about there being a ‘militia’, and that Kafwaya died following an exchange of fire between the security wings and the ‘militia’. Of course Mundubile dismissed the account from the state as an effort to hide the ‘extra-judicial’ killing of the ex-minister.
We are sure that one day a true account of what really transpired will be known as nothing can remain hidden under the sun. If we are to go with the government account that there was indeed a ‘militia’ that they were fighting, they will definitely win kudos from Zambians that they intervened on time to save millions from potential trouble.
However, if they committed “extra-judicial” killing of an innocent person, then that person’s blood will continue crying out for vengeance and justice, and at one point or the other, all those who participated in the death and any potential cover up – if Mundubile’s account is to be believed – will have their own share of judgment and retribution if they fail to make amendments.
Let’s watch the space and see where all this will end up.
