A women of Asian descent yesterday wept uncontrollably in the corridors of Lusaka Central Police Station after she was arrested for getting involved in what seemed to be a serious traffic offence, going by the back and forth arguments between the women in question and the officers.
Initially, the woman tried to argue out her case forcefully but faced with about five police officers, it wasn’t long before their uncompromising posture started to wear her down, with the first drop of tears appearing then heavy tears and finally loud wailing as the conversation proceeded.
However, what seemed to concern the woman most was not really the arrest but the fear of her husband knowing that she had actually committed an offence and had been taken in by the police.
“Please, please I beg you, my husband won’t let me I beg. Please, please,” the women wept loudly with her hands clasped together and tears flowing from her eyes. “My husband won’t let me please.”
As the wailing got louder, one of the police officers took the woman to one of the offices, and within the few minutes managed to calm her down.
What followed next is anybody’s guess, because the women who had walked into the same office a few minutes ago wailing loudly, came out of it with a smile a while later. The teary eyes, still red from the furious weeping, had given way to a new glow, and the lady proceeded in gentle and relaxed fashion to demand the return of her driver’s licence, which had earlier been confiscated by the same police officers who had seemed uncompromising only a few minutes earlier. The driver’s licence was immediately given back to her and off she proceeded with a glow on her face.
