ACC probe against their own Administrator

By Daily Revelation Editor

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has commended the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for actively investigating the matter involving their head of administration Ivor Mukwankwa, whom they have found wanting after establishing some areas of concern against him, including in the manner he has been managing the commission’s fleet of automobiles.

In a written response to Daily Revelation, TI-Z executive director Maurice Nyambe commended the commission for actively investigating the issue as opposed to sweeping it under the carpet.

The position from TI-Z comes after a story in Daily Revelation, where the commission confirmed to the newspaper, after an inquiry, that they were investigating Mukwankwa and were about to effect an arrest.

The ACC response to the query must be commended, especially that it is revealing some uncomfortable inside issues bordering on alleged abuse by a very senior official, the institution’s secretary and chief controller, in a key institution that has been mandated to fight corruption in this country.

Despite their statement being somehow technical, it nevertheless, brought out the important fact that there were active operations by the commission against their head of administration. The public is watching to see the conclusion of this matter, since the commission has indicated to them that they are able to deal with the risk of abuse within their own ranks.

There is a saying that charity begins at home. Added to that there is a famous Bible scripture that states, in summarised form, that one cannot remove a log in another person’s eye until they have first removed the log in their own eye. The fact that the commission is conducting investigations, or assessments, as they call it, shows that they are capable of handling serious matters within their own organisation, and are even brave enough to mention them to the public when queried.

We encourage them that as they follow through on this matter, let them also revisit some of the other active investigations they have been conducting, against whoever is involved, including the senior government officials serving in the current administration.

While, commendable that they have shown bravery in coming out to state the name and action they are taking against, or have taken against Mukwankwa, we urge the commission to also show the same bravery in naming the ministers and other senior government officials they have been investigating. The commission indicated that they could not mention the names of the senior government officials they were investigating in order to protect their integrity. What integrity the commission is protecting is questionable, because for them to embark on investigations and even announce them, it means that there is something serious they are looking into about the people involved.
