MMD immediate past deputy spokesperson Peter Phiri has urged the UPND administration to be cautious with the proposal by some stakeholders calling for reconciliation among political party leaders.
In a statement, Phiri stated that the UPND government should tread carefully with the fight against corruption, saying failure Tom do that would end up turning the “fight against corruption a new normal.”
“The information trickling down that some civil society organisations and other political stakeholders are pursuing an agenda aimed at reconciling some political leaders are raising some concerns among some of us,” Phiri stated. “It is unfortunate that some stakeholders want to stop the fight against corruption in the name of reconciliation. If the UPND government is not careful, this fight against corruption will just become the new normal.”
Phiri also stated that the fight against graft needs concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
“We need the involvement of all us, stakeholders in the fight against corruption in order for us to eradicate this vice,” said Phiri.
Meanwhile, Phiri has has called on the UPND government to ensure that the general citizenry enjoy their democratic right of expressing divergent views on governance issues.
“Differences in political opinions should be encouraged. That is part of our democracy that we fought for as MMD. And this has to be encouraged and continue for our desired democracy,” stated Phiri.
