‎CF and zero tolerance to corruption

By Daily Revelation Editor

The Citizens First (CF) say they cannot join hands with others as they have zero tolerance to corruption

‎In a recent interview with Daily Revelation, the party’s deputy secretary general Dr Mwaba Kasese said the CF was different from the PF and UPND.

‎”We can say we are different from PF and UPND. It’s for this reason that we are saying we can’t join hands with others because we have zero tolerance to corruption,” said Dr Kasese. “Can they state which party has ruled before which has zero tolerance to corruption? Anyone who wants to stand as president, whether on PF, SP, let them demonstrate that they did not agree with what was happening in PF and what is happening in UPND.”

‎Indeed, since the UNIP government of Dr Kenneth Kaunda left office, with the exception of maybe the administration of Levy Mwanawasa, the other administrations that have led this country have shown very little to no appetite towards the fight against corruption. Dr Kasese therefore, has a point on that score.

‎She also has a point when she talks about the need for a zero tolerance to corruption in the event her party were elected into office. However, from the experience of UPND, PF and MMD, it seems zero tolerance to corruption is easier said than done. We hope the CF would be different in the event the Zambian people were to entrust them with power.

‎Of course, it’s not lost on us that their leader Harry Kalaba resigned as Foreign Affairs minister during the administration of 6th Republican president Edgar Lungu, over what he described as swelling levels of corruption. One can only hope that he would hold firm to that position if he were to have all the state power at his disposal.

‎We say so because there seems to have been a tendency in this country where the topmost leaders would want to pursue the right course, but they are mostly betrayed by some of their own most loyal and close lieutenants, who view their election into office as their own time to also eat. As a result due to personal ties and the seemingly too good to ignore temptations which come with incumbency, presidents usually give in. The vibe and commitment of their early months towards zero tolerance against corruption quickly disappear into thin air as graft thrives under their watch, often with their participation.

‎Which brings us to another point Dr Kasese raised, when she said that her party cannot join hands with others as they have zero tolerance to corruption. However, we disagree with her over that remark because her party has previously joined hands with the same PF she said those seeking leadership must demonstrate that they don’t agree with the corruption of PF and UPND. If that is the case, what was CF doing in the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), where they joined hands with a grouping that also had PF and late former president Edgar? What has changed now? Have they received a fresh baptism that has made them to forget their past this suddenly?

‎While still on that, Zambians remain watchful in order to ensure that CF will live to their word never to join hands with parties whose hands they say are tainted with corruption.
