Energy expert Johnstone Chikwanda has observed that the government is making significant strides in promoting renewable energy and energy transition in Zambia through various policy initiatives.
In an interview with Daily Revelation yesterday, Chikwanda elaborated on the government’s efforts, saying, the operationalisation of the ‘Open Access Policy’ was a game-changer, as it allowed private investors to access existing transmission and distribution infrastructure, eliminating the need for duplicate investments.
“Additionally, the ‘Net Metering’ policy enables households to generate their own energy and sell surplus into the grid, a first for Zambia,” Chikwanda said.
He also highlighted the approval of a multi-year tariff migration plan by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), which provided investors with a guaranteed direction of tariffs over a five-year period.
Chikwanda further talked about the implementation of incentives to make renewable energy products more affordable, including the waiver of over 30 percent in taxes on select products, such as gensets.
“The media has a crucial role to play in monitoring the impact of these initiatives and ensuring that prices are coming down,” Chikwanda said. “Energy transition is a journey that requires patience, a mindset shift, and proactive involvement from all stakeholders. It’s not a journey that can be left to the government alone.”
He said the government’s efforts were expected to attract private investment, create jobs, and increase access to clean energy for households and businesses.
According to Chikwanda, the renewable energy sector had the potential to contribute significantly to Zambia’s economic growth and development.
“We need to work together to ensure that the benefits of renewable energy are shared by all,” he added.
Chikwanda called on all stakeholders, including the media, to play an active role in promoting awareness and understanding of the benefits of renewable energy.
“We need to change the narrative around energy and recognise the opportunities that renewable energy presents,” said Chikwanda.
