‘CLEVER’ KK CHOSE NON-ALIGNMENT OVER BEING A PUPPET, CHARGES CHITALA

By Staff Reporter

Former Zambia’s Ambassador to Libya Dr Mbita Chitala says clever leaders like founding president Dr Kenneth Kaunda chose non-alignment as the policy best suited to Zambia than choosing to be a puppet and a comprador element.

The United States of America Senate through its Twitter Account said President Hakainde was on a war path against what they claimed China’s malign and predatory influence in Zambia, something the Zambian President has neither rebuffed nor clarified since the position was announced on his behalf by the US Foreign Relations Committee. The Senate of the United States is the higher of the two houses of congress in that country (equivalent to Parliament here in Zambia).

The chairperson of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee tweeted that, “I was honored to meet with @HHichilema – a strong leader & bright spot for democracy in Africa. HH is working hard to curb China’s malign & predatory influence in #Zambia, as well as increase cooperation with US. I look forward to many years of continued partnership.

But Dr Chitala argued that China has been Zambia’s all weather friend and that currently most of the developmental projects in the country are on hold because Zambia has foolishly chosen to ignore China’s selfless assistance and befriended former colonisers who only give the country money for diseases but never for capital projects.

“China is an all-weather friend of Zambia. China has never colonized any African country. In fact, together with the Soviet Union (Russia), they helped us get our political independence from European colonialists and those who enslaved us. After our independence, almost every development initiative that Zambia has taken has been as a result of selfless support of China. From the Tazara Railway which the Western countries refused to support to all our major infrastructure such as major roads, hospitals, schools, telecoms, sports stadiums, power stations etc has been with the financial and technical support of China,” Dr Chitala argued in a statement to Daily Revelation Media..

He stated that even the country’s defence was anchored on China’s fraternal friendship arguing that it would be extremely “un-clever to be persuaded by China’s enemies to abandon our friendship with China.”

“China has no malign or predatory influence on Zambia. It is our friend that has supported our independence struggle and provided resources to end our poverty and neo-colonial dependency. Currently most of our development projects are on hold because we have foolishly chosen to ignore the selfless assistance that China has given us,” stated Dr Chitala. “We have instead chosen to befriend our former colonizers who will give you resources for diseases and so called democracy projects but never for capital expansion such as to build roads, bridges, schools, hospitals i.e for capital accumulation to end poverty. That’s why clever leaders such as Kaunda chose non-alignment as the most geopolitical policy that is best suited to our situation than choosing the policy of being a puppet and a comprador element.”

Historians need to be unemotional and face the cold facts of history impartially. What Dr Mbita Chitala has said, with due respect is full of misleading points.
    1. The United States never colonised Zambia.
    2. The United States recognised Zambia at independence without any qualms.
    3. Until the 1970s, Zambia was heavily assisted by western countries. Britain continued to supply Zambia both personnel like teachers, lecturers and doctors. Many of these were paid competitive salaries by the British government.
    4. When the Portuguese in Mozambique destroyed the Luangwa bridge in 1968, the British came to Zambia’s aid to build the bridge, there is to this day.
    5. Britain continued to support the fledgeling Zambia defence forces. When Ian Smith confiscated Zambia’s aeroplanes, Britain supplied military hardware and staff to train Zambians.
    6. Zambia fell out of favour with western countries when it became a one-party-dictatorship. KK turned to Eastern dictatorships like Brezhnev and Mao for help. We all know that the one-party-state was not good for Zambia. Dr Mbita Chitala has forgotten that he was in the movement for multiparty democracy. He never said that KK was clever, then!

Of course, there are some projects which western countries refused to fund, and TAZARA is one of them. Looking at TAZARA’s history, one could say that, in hindsight, they were right. TAZARA has not benefitted the Zambian taxpayer at all, and China has been reluctant to modernise it.
The British ruled Zambia from 1924 to 1964 but never owned the mineral rights. OUR OWN kings like Lewanika and others had sold those rights to the BSA Co. The British government agreed to pay half of the money needed for the Zambian government to own the rights.
We escaped British colonialism but we are entering Chinese colonialism with eyes wide open.

I suggest you go back into the rat hole you have just emerged from, for the simple reason that your points are rubbish. You can definitely sell your parents for a penny.
