“I can now begin to disclose that we worked well with Chishimba Kambwili to bring down Edgar Lungu. That’s the reason why he didn’t go with his party into PF. He left it saying remain here, me I will go and be issuing tribal remarks so that the person I’m representing will be hated by the citizens. And that’s what happened. Oh! By the way we wish Mr Chishimba Kambwili a very swift and expeditious quick recovery,” said Information minister Cornelius Mweetwa.
These are the remarks which brought so much talking in the country, with conclusion having been reached that the UPND was working hand-in-glove with Chishimba and his going back to PF was a well-orchestrated plan to destroy Lungu by issuing tribal remarks.
Cornelius, the following day in the morning appeared on Radio Phoenix to deny this conclusion saying his words were taken out of context, and that his remarks did not imply to mean that the UPND hired Chishimba to do the dirty work for them but that both parties served the same purpose of ultimately de-campaigning Lungu.
We just don’t know what Cornelius meant by starting his remarks with the word “disclose”. Because if you are going to disclose something, it means you are bringing to the public something that was under wraps.
However, he could also be right as State House chief communications analyst Clayson Hamasaka suggested that he was merely being sarcastic and dissing the opposition and that not much should be read into that. Cornelius is one of the principal antagonists in the UPND towards the opposition.
That aside, whether Cornelius meant what he said or not, we are just wondering why he decided to bring into discussion someone whose government had just evacuated for specialist treatment to South Africa, barely 24 hours before those remarks were uttered, for among other illnesses hypertension, as Chishimba himself has disclosed. Those who have suffered from hypertension or indeed still suffer from the same condition know how stressful it can be especially when it’s at that critical condition warranting one’s evacuation. We do not actually know the true extent of the illness or illnesses Chishimba is suffering from as that can only be determined by the medical personnel attending to him. But we know that he has publicly complained or claimed that his BP has been consistently high.
And so after disclosing how the UPND worked with Chishimba, Cornelius ended his briefing by wishing him a very swift and expeditious quick recovery. Such kind words from Cornelius. Not just sure if they will help stabilise Chishimba’s condition or worsen it. However, we are sure he must have taken note of what Cornelius said to have indicated through his lawyer Kennedy Mambwe that he would issue a comprehensive statement once he felt well, although he felt that the remarks from the Information minister were contemptuous.
