The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set June, 26, 2025 as the date for the Lumezi Constituency by-elections.

This follows the conviction of Independent member of parliament Munir Zulu who was convicted and sentenced to 12-months imprisonment with hard labour for libel.

Immediately he was convicted and remanded in jail, Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti, formally notified the ECZ through a letter dated April 8th, 2025, triggering the start of the by-election process in Lumezi.

Zulu’s seat was declared vacant in line with constitutional provisions, which disqualified a sitting MP upon conviction by a court of law.

In a statement released yesterday, ECZ corporate affairs manager Patricia Luhanga stated that the commission confirmed the vacancy and scheduled the by-election in accordance with electoral regulations.

She stated that nominations for the by-elections would be conducted on May 27, while the campaign period would commence on May, 28 2025.

“ECZ has prescribed Thursday, June 26, 2025 as the date on which to hold the National Assembly by-election in Lumezi Constituency in Lumezi, and (2) ward by-elections in Fibalala ward in Milenge district of Luapula Province and Tuuwa Ward in Sikongo District of Western Province,” she stated.

Luhanga stated that the vacancies in the two wards were due to a resignation of councilor Likezo Kaunga of Tuuwa Ward and death of councillor Misheck Chisala of Fibalala Ward.
