The Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) has warned its members against compromising professional ethics in the execution of their duties, citing concerns over reports of some engineers allegedly colluding with employers to deliver substandard construction works in a bid to cut costs.
In an interview with Daily Revelation yesterday, EIZ public relations and marketing manager Ntalasha Yulu said the institution was worried about the trend, which not only undermined the engineering profession but also put the public at risk.
“The institution will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any members found guilty of unethical conduct, and engineers should uphold integrity, professionalism and accountability at all times,” she said.
Yulu stressed that the stakeholders in the construction sector had a critical role to play in ensuring quality and safety in infrastructure development.
“We urge stakeholders to engage qualified and ethical engineers to guarantee that projects meet the required standards,” said Yulu, noting that EIZ was committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in the engineering profession, and that members who failed to adhere to those standards would faced consequences.
Yulu further said the institution’s primary concern was the safety and well-being of the public, and engineers must prioritise this in their work.
