The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) says it has instituted investigations into alleged fuel water contamination at Surya Service Station in Woodlands, Lusaka.
In a statement today, acting manager – public relations Musonda Chibulu said preliminary investigations revealed that the fuel was contaminated with water on Saturday, January 25, 2025 around 19:30 hours, resulting in reports of vehicle malfunctions from eight motorists who refueled around the same time.
“The ERB, after being notified on Saturday, immediately instructed the Station to halt selling of fuel as investigations were instituted,” Chibulu stated.
He stated that the station will only resume sales after investigations conclude and the product meets applicable Zambian Standards.
Chibulu urged affected motorists who purchased fuel between 19:30 and 20:30 hours and experienced vehicle performance issues to seek redress with Surya Petroleum Limited.
He explained that in cases where motorists fail to provide purchase receipts, the Station’s CCTV system will confirm fuel purchases during the affected time, and the ERB ensures that authenticated complaints will result in vehicle repairs.
“All motorists whose vehicles malfunctioned following purchase of the fuel shall have their vehicles repaired once their complaints are authenticated either by way of providing a purchase receipt as proof of refueling from the station at the stated time or through verification via the CCTV system,” Chibulu stated.
He further urged motorists to obtain receipts when purchasing fuel and report contaminated fuel to both the service provider and ERB promptly.
“The ERB can be contacted through the Toll-Free Line 8484, social media platforms, as well as physically through our offices in Lusaka, Kitwe, Livingstone, and Kasama,” stated Chibulu, adding that the board was committed to ensuring that all fuel sold in Zambia meets the required standards.
