The family of the 23-year old Zambian who was killed in Ukraine while fighting for Russia, say they do not have any indication when his remains will be repatriated to Zambia.
Lemekhani Nyirenda was killed in Ukraine while fighting for Russia, with the sister indicating to BBC that the family suspected that he was recruited by Russia’s private military company, the Wagnar Group, in exchange for freedom after he was sentenced for a drug related crime.
Nyirenda went to Russia in 2019 on a government-to-government scholarship programme at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. In 2020 he was arrested while working on part time basis for an online courier company after police found him in possession of the package.
But asked if the family were surprised how someone who was in prison found himself on the battlefront in Ukraine, family representative Dr Ian Banda refused to give any perspective on the matter saying their focus was to repatriate the remains of their family member and give him an honourable burial.
Ask if they had any indications on when the remains would be in, Dr Banda said he did not know as no information over that matter has come in yet.
