French minister of State for Francophone and International Partnerships Thani Mohamed-Soilihin has announced that France has pledged 2.8 million euros to support the “Grain for Ukraine” initiative, a vital effort made possible by Ukraine’s grain donation, to combat the severe drought that impacted Zambia.
Speaking during a visit to Chongwe yesterday, Soilihi emphasised the initiative’s importance, particularly in benefiting children.
He said the initiative demonstrated international solidarity amidst the country’s challenging times.
Soilihi also revealed that the World Food Programme was implementing the effort, which highlighted the crucial link between education and nutrition.
“France’s support is part of its broader commitment to addressing global food insecurity and promoting sustainable development,” Soilihi said.
He further noted that his visit to Zambia underscored France’s strong partnership with the country, marked by significant funding for various development projects, including budget support, debt restructuring and climate change initiatives.
Soilihi added that France’s commitment to Zambia’s development was evident in its support for the country’s debt restructuring efforts.
“It is our role to ensure that children have food in their stomachs while at school, or they will not be able to learn,” Mohamed-Soilihi said, highlighting the significance of the initiative in supporting the well-being and education of Zambian children,” said Soilihi.
