Opposition People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) leader Andyford Banda says the government’s handling of the Kafue River pollution caused by Sino Metals on the Copperbelt is a clear indication of negligence in safeguarding the livelihoods and well-being of Zambians.
In an interview with Daily Revelation last week, Banda argued that the government should have revoked Sino Metals’ mining license following the environmental breach that led to a fishing ban on the river.
He said the pollution significantly impacted communities along the Kafue River, where fishing was a vital source of income.
“The government’s inaction is unacceptable and Sino Metals’ mining license should have been revoked immediately,” Banda said. “This would have sent a strong message to other mining firms that mineral extraction must not come at the expense of the environment.”
He further urged the government to ensure Sino Metals fully compensated all those affected by the fish ban.
“The government must take responsibility for protecting its citizens’ livelihoods and hold accountable those responsible for environmental degradation,” said Banda.
Banda said the government needed to prioritise the well-being of its citizens over corporate interests and take decisive action against polluters like Sino Metals.
