The Ministry of Energy has reduced the approval period for solar project applications from over six months to just 48 hours, fast-tracking private sector investment in renewable energy to meet the Presidential directive of adding 1000 Megawatts(MW) of solar energy to the national grid.
In a statement yesterday, Energy minister Makozo Chikote stated that the government was committed towards supporting the growth of the solar energy sector by providing an efficient, transparent and investor-friendly environment.
“The streamlined process will help investors move forward faster and contribute to the accelerated expansion of solar power in Zambia,” Chikote stated.
The minister stated that by cutting the approval period, the government removed lengthy administrative delays, allowing investors to begin generating power sooner, resulting in quicker economic returns and improved energy access.
Chikote stated that the Ministry was creating an enabling environment for renewable energy investment through clear policy frameworks, simplified procedures, and bankable power purchase agreements.
“We urge local authorities and traditional leaders to play an active role by availing land for solar energy projects,” Chikote stated
He noted that access to land was critical for successful rollout and grassroots collaboration was vital for timely implementation and shared benefits.
The minister further stated that the ministry remained open to consultations and stood ready to offer technical support for proposals aimed at increasing electricity generation.
He explained that all stakeholders with innovative energy solutions should engage the ministry to strengthen the country’s energy security.
“Zambia faces a significant electricity deficit, worsened by the 2024 drought, highlighting the need to diversify energy sources. Accelerating solar energy investment is crucial for meeting demand and creating a reliable, sustainable energy sector,” stated Chikote.
He also stated that the private sector involvement was essential towards achieving the 1000MW solar target, and urged local and international investors to seize this opportunity to build a greener, more energy-resilient Zambia.
Chikote added that the initiative formed part of the ministry’s broader agenda to create an enabling environment for renewable energy investment in 2025.
