Police are going against their President’s instructions by holding Chilufya Tayali without charging him, says Bowman Lusambo.
And Lusambo said President Hakainde Hichilema must get to addressing high fuel and commodity prices rather than ordering people’s arrests, claiming it was just a matter of time before he vacates office in 2026, and must not even shift to State House but remain at his same Community House.
Speaking after he attempted to see Tayali at Ibex Police station, Lusambo said police have denied him, and the others, including Tayali’s wife from seeing him.
“They refused us to see him saying there are instructions which have come from the high command that no one should see Chilufya Tayali, including his the wife. They denied the wife to see him, and we are saying where is Human Rights? And Chilufya is not yet charged and they are keeping him here, and this is against their President’s instructions,” Lusambo said. “If you recall, the President gave instructions that don’t arrest before investigating and before finding a case for that particular suspect. They are ignoring the instructions.”
Lusambo said it seemed the country had two Inspector Generals of Police, the President himself and the other at Force headquarters.
He urged the President to sit down and start addressing the many challenges besetting the nation, including the high fuel prices and high cost of living in the country.
“It’s just a matter of time. I can assure you that it’s just a matter of time, come 2026, President Hakainde Hichilema let him just not even shift to State House. Let him remain at Community house,” said Lusambo.
