Hichilema’s double GDP aspirations

By Daily Revelation Editor

President Hakainde Hichilema says he has an agenda to more than double the size of Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), believing this will benefit the people of the country.

Speaking at the official opening of the Land Linked-Zambia Conference at Ciela Resort under the theme: “Embracing SMART transport corridors in Africa,” in Chongwe last week, the President noted that Africa had the least intra-Africa trade and investment, which was an indictment on its leaders.

“My friend from the European Union and I had a small conversation and I said look, we need to move fast, we need to make things happen. Me I am only elected for 5 years and I have an agenda courtesy of the Zambian people, I have an agenda to more than double the size of the GDP of the country. It’s my agenda,” said Hichilema.

You have our support Mr. President over those noble ideas you announced. We actually don’t believe that Hichilema wakes up every morning to go to the office in order to plan bad things for the Zambian people. We actually think that he wakes up in the morning planning to do good, sometimes he gets it right, but sometimes he also fails because probably the path he has chosen has betrayed him or he has betrayed the right path himself.

We believe that Hichilema is a man who is working under pressure everyday trying to improve things in the country, trying to handle a lot of things at a go. And that’s where the problem could be, because no one can solve everything all at once. What Hichilema should focus on is conducting targeted success, where the target in one specific field will reap the most optimum rewards for the benefit of all, especially in fields such as mining and agriculture.

Doubling the country’s GDP is achievable, although very doubtful in this first term, unless with enhanced effort, dedication, focus and patriotism from him if Zambians will give him another mandate next year. For now, he must focus more towards working than talking up success, as the works themselves will speak for him if indeed they are there.

But even at this late hour in his first term, there is a lot that he can still do to make his first term a memorable one. All it needs is vision, dedication, commitment, patriotism and a renewed sense of purpose and energy. Let him remind himself about those best wishes he held firm before assuming office, as opposed to matters that draw his focus away from them. Those noble ideals of rooting out corruption, allowing freedoms to flourish by freeing state institutions, using the natural resources of this country to benefit the wider populace as opposed to a few powerful partisans, as well as working with all the brains –including his opponents – for the betterment of Zambia. Ideals about giving Zambians a people driven Constitution as opposed to one imposed on them by the government.

As President, he must work more towards thickening his skin to avoid getting affected by the everyday criticism, and allowing his sympathisers to use state institutions to fall on his opponents like a tonne of bricks, to borrow his predecessor’s phrase.

A renewed sense of patriotism should entail that all the abundant resources in this country will have to be harnessed for the ultimate benefit of Zambians, as opposed to multinationals, especially those who provide one or two favours to the ruling party.

The 4 percent growth in 2024 is good progress given the many challenges the country faced, especially with the drought, unfavorable yields and the energy crisis. He should work towards ensuring that the double GDP growth he’s aiming for is sustainable, with tangible trickle down effects being felt by the masses in the country.
