Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General Tom Shamakamba says he personally directed that Ministry of Information Media Director Thabo Kawana be investigated following the purchase of the P-Series vehicle valued at US$34,000 for his wife.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Shamakamba said he
read the complaints against Kawana and ordered investigations to commence into
the matter.
“Kawana I can confirm that there is an investigation
which myself I initiated after reading the press. Yes,” he said.
Asked specifically what they have been able to
establish in their investigations against Kawana, Shamakamba said the story
about Kawana was known but that he cannot divulge how far they have gone in
those investigations, saying they will release a press statement in due course.
He, however, confirmed that ACC officials have visited
Southern Cross and the lending institution during the course of the investigations.
Impeccable sources recently told Daily Revelation
that investigations officers recently visited Southern Cross Motors and the
Public Service Micro Finance Company offices as part of the investigations into
how Kawana purchased the P-Series vehicle for his wife.
The sources said ACC wanted to establish their own
facts besides those provided by Kawana and the two institutions, Southern Cross
and PSMFC.
Southern Cross recently told News Diggers that the
brand new vehicle that Kawana bought for his wife as a Christmas gift was
bought at 34,000 United States Dollars, with Public Service Micro Finance
Company chief executive officer Mubanga Mwiko saying that Kawana qualified for
a loan car, like everyone else working in government.
