President Hakainde Hichilema says the problem of Africa is not ideas but implementation of the ideas.
Speaking during Continental Energy Infrastructure and Investment Forum at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema said despite the African continent having sound ideas, they evaporated at the point of implementation.
“I do want to emphasise that this forum is important. Truly important. Africa’s issue is not ideas. Africa’s issue is about getting things done. We fall short there. We say a lot of things. Sometimes loosely, sometimes in a structured and organised way,” President Hichilema said. “But we fall short on delivering. Those ideas that we discuss, which are actually technically sound, but, somewhat our efforts evaporate at the point of implementation. And l am talking about effective implementation.”
President Hichilema said his government had taken reforms in almost every sector.
”We have taken reforms in almost every sector. In energy, the minister touched on open access. Very, very important, l think Zambia is way ahead of other countries in the region, in terms of reforms in the energy sector,” President Hichilema said. “Open access, independent power producers, independent traders, very important. To connect the producers to the consumers, when they need it, if they need it, and many times they do.”
And minister of Energy Makozo Chikote said the investment by the government in the energy sector was bearing fruit.
He said the government had put up an ambitious target of making the country a hub for energy trade.
“Your good leadership is yielding results in the energy sector. And compared to what the noise makers have been confusing our good citizens, under your leadership Mr President, we responded decisively to the drought,” said Chikote. “Through targeted interventions ,such as diversification of energy sources, emergency power imports and exports accelerated renewable energy projects. And that is solar.”
