Secretary to the Treasury Felix Nkulukusa says the country is set to benefit from a significant boost in a development agenda and drought response pledge of €108 million (about K 3.14 billion) from the German government.
In a joint statement, Nkulukusa stated that the commitment marked a major milestone in the 60-year partnership between Germany and Zambia, reinforcing Germany’s role as a key partner in Zambia’s development.
German Ambassador Anne Wagner-Mitchell and Nkulukusa jointly, announced that the German and Zambian governments had successfully concluded bilateral talks on development cooperation, held in Lusaka on September 17, 2024.
Nkulukusa, stated that these talks focused on aligning development cooperation with Zambia’s national priorities as set out in the 8th National Development Plan.
He stated that the pledged funds would have a significant impact on key sectors.
“I am happy to note that the €108 million committed will contribute to good governance, water and sanitation as well as food and nutrition security,” Nkulukusa stated.
He stated that this support aligned with Zambia’s overall aspirations for social-economic transformation.
German Ambassador to Zambia, Dr. Anne Wagner-Mitchell stated that the German government had allocated funds to address the drought crisis.
“We are committed to supporting Zambia’s drought response efforts,” Dr. Wagner-Mitchell stated.
“The €26 million allocation will be channelled through the World Food Programme and UN agencies to combat nutrition deficiencies among vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and young children.”
Commenting on Zambia’s progress in public financial management, Dr. Wagner-Mitchell, praised the country’s efforts.
“We commend the Government of the Republic of Zambia on its efforts to analyse and address structural impediments to inclusive and sustainable development,” Dr. Wagner-Mitchell stated. “The strive to implement the necessary reforms are the foundation for our long and committed development cooperation.”
Head of Division from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Dr. Frank Hofmann stated that Gemany’s commitment to Zambia’s development stemmed from a strong partnership.
Dr. Hofmann also stated that Germany was dedicated to supporting Zambia in overcoming current challenges and building a resilient future.
