Economic Front leader Wynter Kabimba is saying that it should not even take a prophet to predict the historical fact that presidents who have failed to fight the perception of corruption have paid a heavy price at the polls.
“This answer to say corruption must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt by the Anti-Corruption Commission will lead HH into problems. They will not wait for the courts to deliver those judgments,” Kabimba said. “Before he knows it, it will be 2026 and they will pass their own judgment and overtake the judgments of the courts. They will tell him keep your judgments which are pending in courts we are going to deliver our own judgments. That’s what I have seen myself. And it’s historical.”
Kabimba argued that it was only Kenneth Kaunda who successfully fought the perception of corruption of corruption. He said third Republican president Levy Mwanasawa made great effort and also Michael Sata showed that he wanted to do something about the matter when he fired deputy ministers Ronald Chitotela and late Rogers Mwewa.
Kabimba is very right actually and we agree with him totally, because if there is one issue Zambians detest of any president is to be seen to be corrupt or being soft on the real or perceived corruption in their administrations. And several presidents have paid dearly for that, especially Frederick Chiluba, Rupiah Banda and Edgar Lungu. We actually find it appalling that Lungu is talking about wanting to come back to serve as president again without giving concrete answers on how he would handle an administration that was free of corruption, if he were re-elected back into office. It is actually not enough for him to want to assume power on the back of President Hakainde Hichilema’s failure, without explaining how he would handle matters differently himself if he were accorded the reins of power again.
Zambians certainly want to hear concrete explanations on how Lungu would run a corrupt free government. And it’s not just Lungu, but all these who are aspiring to lead must explain how they will ensure a corrupt free government if they were provided with the opportunity. Zambians want to hear more from Fred M’membe, Harry Kalaba, Chishala Kateka, Sean Tembo, Saboi Imboela etc on corruption, because if there is one lesson Zambians have learnt from the opposition leaders, it is that they promise so many things when they know they are impotent to live up to those promises.
But more importantly, Zambians want to see action from Hichilema who promised so much and who is still promising todate that he abhors corruption, yet it is consuming his very own ‘house’, with several of his ministers facing investigations before the investigative wings.
In fact, the fact that the investigative wings are fearful of announcing investigations against these ministers is because they have seen no political will in the President to live by his word to fight corruption wholesomely. They know that he is someone who talks a lot but usually fails to walk his talk. Actually the men and women in these investigative wings are like those Kabimba described as being more concerned with protecting their jobs, such that the moment they will move in actively against the corrupt ministers will be the very day they will be kissing goodbyes to their jobs.
