Charles Kabwita has hailed President Hakainde Hichilema and minister of Education Douglas Syakalima for their prompt response to the lecturers’ demands.
Charles Kabwita, the UPND Copperbelt deputy information and publicity secretary, youth wing, praised the government’s efforts, saying, the settlement of University of Zambia lecturers dues aligned perfectly with the UPND’s agenda to enhance the well-being of students and also to meet the requirements of university lecturers, ensuring a better education system.
Kabwita further commended President Hichilema for the reinstatement of student meal allowances and the provision of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) bursaries for learners across the board.
“These measures have greatly benefited many young people in our community,” Kabwita stated.
He also appealed for continuous dialogue, stating, that it was key in addressing and resolving issues effectively.
With the settlement, academic activities at the University of Zambia are expected to continue uninterrupted, bringing relief to students and lecturers alike, Kabwita said.
And University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) president Vincent Musilikani, has confirmed that the university will open on July 14, 2024, as scheduled, following the government’s agreement to settle the lecturers’ dues.
Masilikani commended the Ministry of Education’s response, particularly the minister Douglas Syakalima, for assuring the payment of gratuities to the lecturers.
He emphasised that the student’s union prioritised students’ interests and remained a tool for dialogue, urging all students to report to campus for the second semester.
