Mumbi Phiri says it will be difficult for Harry Kalaba to ascend to the Republican presidency because the people of Luapula Province have branded themselves as thieves, while those in Eastern Province have described themselves as incapable of leading.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Phiri said Democratic Party (DP) leader Kalaba should forget about the Republican presidency because he came from a region were they described themselves as thieves.
And Phiri said Chishimba Kambwili’s name is coming up as someone to take over the PF presidency.
“Some people the regions they come from, I don’t think Zambians will give them chance to rule. Those from Luapula started pointing at themselves as thieves. Frederick Chiluba was being prosecuted by Mutembo Nchito. Didn’t they both come from the same region? The region from where my mbuyas come from (Eastern Province), they point at themselves as saying they are not capable of ruling,” Phiri said, saying they failed to vote sufficiently, first for Rupiah Banda and then Edgar Lungu to keep them in power, even as other regions were voting overwhelmingly for “their sons”.
He said the people of Eastern Province were in the forefront removing president Lungu from power in 2021.
“In Luapula those who were prosecuting Chiluba were his own brothers. We saw it too with Katete Kalumba, Xavier Chungu and now with Chitalu Chilufya. Again we just heard confirmation from my brother Ronald Chitotela that he was being persecuted by his own,” Phiri said. “Do you think anyone can trust Kalaba who comes from that region?”
But reminded that there were sufficient grounds to prosecute the people she was mentioning and that it was actually Zambia, the state, which prosecuted them and not the people from their regions, Phiri insisted that it will take generations for people from those regions to take over leadership.
“My children come from a region (Eastern Province) which has no confidence in themselves,” Phiri said. “Anybody can take over, even North Western and Western Province, but these two I have mentioned have destroyed themselves.”
Further put across to her that among some of the reasons people have given over their decision to vote out Lungu was that there was too much corruption in his government,coupled with a failed economy, Phiri said the same was said of Dr Kaunda when he lost in 1991, such that the MMD government then even called in Scotland Yard to investigate him only to find that he only had books.
She said she would not talk much about the corruption allegations as they were currently being investigated.
On the moves to replace president Lungu as PF president and who she was supporting to take over, Phiri said Kambwili’s name was the one she was prominently hearing.
But she said she would support whoever the people want, as they were the final deciders.
