ZESCO United have suffered a blow ahead of Saturday’s league resumption after the international break with news that midfielder Kelvin Kapumbu is returning from Chipolopolo duty with a possible medium-term injury.
Kapumbu sustained an injury while on Chipolopolo duty in the United Arab Emirates where Zambia spent the October, 2023 FIFA international window to play two friendlies in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
The midfielder sustained the injury in Chipolopolo’s first friendly on October 12, against Egypt in Abu Dhabi which Zambia lost 1-0.
It saw Kapumbu ruled out of last night’s last friendly date against Uganda in Sharjah and is now also a doubt for MTN/FAZ Super League leaders Zesco’s Week 8 away game against 14th-positioned Kansanshi Dynamos this Sunday at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola.
Zambia national team physician Dr. Wesley Ngongo told FAZ Media that Kapumbu still needed time to recover from his hamstring injury.
“It is a strain of the hamstring muscle so this one requires a bit more time so he is still on rest at present,” Dr. Ngongo said.
“We are monitoring him on a daily basis but currently he is on rest and from that he is going to have to resume light training which will be gradually increased.”
Kapumbu was one of two players who suffered injuries in the friendly game against Egypt.
The other is veteran defender and 2012 AFCON winner Stoppila Sunzu who was given the all-clear before the Uganda friendly after suffering a mild concussion.
