Katuta’s crusade to use the law as a weapon

By Daily Revelation Editor

Chienge member of parliament (Independent) Given Katuta has urged fellow members of parliament to look out for their own interests, even to the extent of concretising them through the Republican Constitution, should President Hakainde Hichilema’s amendments proceed in the house.

In a recent video, Katuta urged her fellow MPs to be watchful of the youths she said were coming, but that as lawmakers they should not hesitate to make laws that will advantage them against the youths. The same youths Hakainde Hichilema claims he has agreed with to amend the Republican Constitution.

She said even the President should be worried about the pace the youths are coming at, saying “Pakwakana ubunga tapaba insoni (There is no shame when it comes to sharing).”

Katuta said in the same manner the MPs sorted out the district commissioners and council chairpersons when they became “funny”, so should they work together in sorting the youth out.

“Let’s protect our interests,” said Katuta in the video.

Clearly, Katuta is admitting on record that members of parliament have been using the law as a weapon to advantage themselves, while disadvantageing the others at the same time. And she doesn’t end there, she further encourages her fellow members of parliament to use the law as a weapon to protect and secure their interests against the youths, for simply having the temerity of aspiring to contest for positions of leadership in this their country, where they are just as equally entitled as Katuta.

Surprisingly, there has been an eerie silence from members of parliament, both from the ruling and opposition. This is usually the case when it comes to them safeguarding their individual personal interests which favour them. As Katuta has ably put it, when they are sharing ubunga tapaba insoni. If one needed confirmation about politicians being the same, this is it. Very sad indeed.

We would have expected a very forceful response against the gross honesty Katuta displayed in that video about how the law has been weaponised in this country to favour privileged politicians against their fellow nationals. And to imagine that that statement was made during this time when Zambians are debating the highly questionable moves by Hichilema to want to amend the constitution, which has no consensus whatsoever, should send shivers down the spines of all the patriotic nationals.

Hichilema and his government have argued that they want to amend the constitution because ‘they have agreed with the youths and women to do so.’ We would have expected that they would be in the forefront right now denouncing Katuta for her irresponsible remarks, especially that she is literally advocating against the interests of the same youths they claim they are amending the constitution for to ensure proportional representation in the country. The fact that they are quiet is very damning on them and what their true intentions really are. Claims by Hichilema and the politicians he is serving with in government having interest for the youths is highly questionable. Otherwise, we would have seen a lot of women and youths already serving in several positions of influence.

Clearly, Katuta and the politicians would rather perpetuate the vile culture developed in this country where young people are used as instruments to enable politicians rise to power, instead of them taking over the leadership mantle.
