Jailed former Defence minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba’s lawyer Charles Changano, has confirmed that his client has not died as reported on social media but he is admitted in a stable condition in Maina Soko Military Hospital.
And information permanent Thabo Kawana has warned all those abusing cyber space that their days are numbered.
Speaking at Maina Soko Military Medical Centre yesterday, Changano said he rushed to the hospital because he heard rumors when he was at court that his client had died.
“I came here to confirm as I could not answer other social media that would ring me. But I am from the wards, my client is quite better and stable and we were laughing with him to say, ‘I thought you were dead and he said no! I am here, I am sleeping, I am being taken care of’. So I can confirm as one of the lawyers for GBM that our client is in a stable condition,” Changano said.
And Kawana dismissed social media claims that GBM had died.
He warned people to desist from spreading false information on social media.
Kawana said the former defence minister was recovering well at Maina Soko Medical Centre.
He said that Mwamba was not in danger but was in a stable condition.
“There are comments suggesting that GBM has died, he remains admitted and he is in a stable condition,” he said.
Kawana warned that authorities were strengthening cyber security laws to ensure that individuals spreading false information were held accountable.
He warned that all those using social media irresponsibly would be arrested for alarming the nation.
“I want to warn those warning the cyberspace that their days are numbered. When the law catches up with you, you will begin to say that there is no freedom of expression and the democratic space is shrinking yet you know that you are alarming the nation unnecessarily,” said Kawanam
Kawana said GBM had a family that might be alarmed with the news spreading on social media.
