Kawana warns social media admins over Cyber Law

By Chinoyi Chipulu

Information and Media permanent secretary Thabo Kawana has warned that adminstrators of social media groups will be held liable for illegal and malicious posts on their platforms.

In a video that has gone viral, Kawana said administrators either running an online page or a WhatsApp group would be responsible for posts group members make in their groups.

Kawana said administrators should check what their members posted to avoid being in conflict with the law.

“So when people post malicious things there, you as admin, will be held liable and accountable. Currently the law will deal with that person that has done the actual posting but once amended, this law,  it will also ensure that you as admin of that page, as admin of that whatsApp group will be held liable so think twice before you accept to be admin on a WhatsApp group,” he warned.

He urged whatsApp administrators to check the people they added to the group and the type of information being posted.

“Anything malicious, illegal or detrimental, you as admin will be held liable and the law is being amended,” said Kawana.
