President Hakainde Hichilema has urged the nation to remain hopeful that the illegal miners who were buried by a landslide at Seseli Mine will be found alive because God works in wonders.
Addressing affected families and Chingola residents yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema said he will not call for national mourning for the people that have been buried underneath because he retained faith that they will be found alive, in the same manner those that were trapped underground in other countries were discovered alive.
“We will do everything humanly possible. Ifyashala ni Lesa (The rest is up to God),” the President said. “We should not mourn these people yet because God works in wonders. He knew even before the accident happened that it will happen … He will protect the people down here.”
He urged against politicizing the matter, urging that all the focus should be channeled towards finding the people that were buried.
“We want to find ways of mining safely so that we don’t have such accidents,” President Hichilema.
Copperbelt minister Elisha Matambo said food for the rescuers will be doubled, and that K10,000 has been given to each affected family.
Mines minister Paul Kabuswe accused those in the opposition of complaining from afar, and challenged them to go to the people rather than just talking and posting things on social media.
He condemned PF vice-president Given Lubinda over what he said as Lubinda’s calls for national mourning, and urged the people to listen to what the President was saying.
A representative from one of the affected families Dorothy Mwila Kangwa asked for a day of prayer to be declared to commit the situation in God’s hands.
