Charity Banda says there are people who are going round in PF saying that former president Edgar Lungu is still wanted as Republican president, especially following the overwhelming affection he received from party supporters during Tutwa Ngulube’s funeral, but that him coming back into office was an impossibility.
And Banda described Davies Mwila as the dullest secretary general the former ruling party has ever had, and that apart from vacating the SG position he must also resign from the party central committee.
Speaking with Daily Revelation, Banda, the elected Lusaka provincial chairlady in the dissolved committee, said she did not want to speculate too much into what she described as a rumor, but that if it turns out to be true, she will speak out forcefully against why she feels Lungu is not the right person to take the former ruling party into the 2026 general elections.
“I take it as a rumor (that Lungu is contemplating standing again as he feels that he is still popular), a very strong rumour actually from some sections of people who are telling us that he can come back. A former ruling party can come back to power but not a former leader. If it comes out I will speak my mind,” Banda said.
She said there was a recent recording going round where Mwila was saying that the former ruling party needed someone with money to take over the party leadership, but argued that Mwila and Lungu had money in the 2021 general elections but still lost, saying “the party needed a new Sata.”
“Lungu had money and all the instruments of power but he lost. We are not talking about money but leadership,” Banda said.
She challenged Mwila to mention one achievement he scored in PF while serving as secretary general, and accused him of dancing with the cadres who were insulting people, which she said contributed to the former ruling party’s loss.
Banda said the ruling party would hold a general conference, and that no one had the power to stop it including Lungu himself.
“We don’t want leaders like Davies. He (Mwila) is the dullest SG we have had from Sata’s time. We had Chimumbwa, Wynter Kabimba was a good SG even if he had his own issues … I don’t know what Mr Lungu saw in Mwila because he’s a failure. He was not just supposed to leave as SG but also from the central committee. This is not the rebranding we want,” said Mwila.
