Edgar Lungu does not qualify to be referred to as father of the nation, argues former Luapula Province permanent secretary Major Ben Phiri.
In a statement to Daily Revelation, Maj Phiri stated that he wondered what happens to some people’s brains when they write issues of national significance.
“Firstly, Edgar Lungu can never assume the appellation of Father of the nation because he neither qualifies to be referred to in that fashion nor did he preside over a government that was responsive to peoples aspirations and expectations. Secondly the title of ‘Father of the Nation’ is routinely ascribed to the individual who played a leading and visible role in the struggle for liberation from colonial masters. In the case of Tanzania it was Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere who todate is referred to as Baba wa Taifa (Father of the Nation). Former Presidents Ali Hassan Mwinyi and Jakaya Kikwete Murisho can never be referred to as Fathers of the nation because each country only has one such an individual dead or alive,” Maj Phiri stated. “Here in Zambia, we have only one Father of the Nation and that is the late His Excellency Dr Kenneth David Kaunda as he is the one who led us to independence in 1964. For purposes of clarity, H.E Dr Sam Nujoma is the Father of the Nation in Namibia not anyone else. This dignified term of Father of the Nation is not given the same way nick names are and even if the criteria were to be altered slightly, Edgar Lungu can NEVER meet the threshold for him to carry that prefix.”
