Former president Edgar Lungu is reportedly telling his confidants that he is not ready to give up PF power, saying he will run in 2026, believing that President Hakainde Hichilema is becoming unpopular with Zambians.
And when contacted for comment that he was among the people Lungu mentioned that to, Kennedy Kamba described that as speculation, but that the former president has democratic rights to aspire for whatever he wanted.
Well placed sources have told Daily Revelation that Kamba was among the people, including Given Lubinda, Stephen Kampyongo and Brian Mundubile, Lungu recently announced his intentions to.
“In that meeting the former president mentioned that he knew very well the person they wanted on the ground, but that he was not ready to give up power as he views that HH (President Hichilema) is becoming unpopular with the people. In fact he mentioned that whether ‘you like it or not I am coming back to power in 2026’,” sources said. “Also in the meeting, it was mentioned that the Lusaka provincial committee was dissolved because people like chairlady Charity Banda and vice-youth chairman Kelvin Kaunda were insulting the president and the leaders, but that Kamba had failed to rein in on them. They said that after Kamba queried why they dissolved the whole committee when they were just mentioning two people as being problematic.”
When contacted over this information and when queried for comment, Kamba said: “Ahhh not as at now.”
“You have information? Awee I don’t know.”
Put to him that this was the information he knew very well about, Kamba said he would not react to speculation, but that Lungu had the right to decide what he wanted.
“Aha ha ha ha ha ha ha, no the people will decide if they want to bring back ba Lungu, people of Zambia will tell us whom they want. We always need to put our ears and eyes on the ground. Whoever the people wants that is the person we are going to support as the party, as I always say,” Kamba said. “We have to put the ears on the ground and if the majority members of the party feels that this person can lead, me that is what I will follow. But as for me I don’t have that information that that is what is happening, because you know I am now busy with my own business and I am trying to do one or two things.”
“You may say you don’t have that information although you know that we know. What do you make of the fact that publicly he has stated that he’s retiring but then privately he is speaking the other language?” the journalist asked, with Kamba responding: “Yah! But for me he has got the right to do whatever he wants. He’s got democratic rights and it’s up to the Zambian people to make a decision. He’s got the democratic right. As for me I don’t have that information, you put it on record and I don’t want to comment on speculations.”
Asked if his committee was dissolved for supporting Chishimba Kambwili, Kamba said: “Those are internal issues which I cannot discuss in the media, but what was on the letter is that we made the party lose in Lusaka and some of our colleagues they have been uttering derogative statements against the former president and other senior leaders of the party. Those are the two charges which they gave. So speculation will of course always be there.”
He said he has written to the central committee over the dissolution of his committee.
“I have met the party president, we have shared ideas over this issue so I am expecting the party president and the central committee to make the final decision and we are waiting for that decision to come out,” he said.
Asked if he agreed that some of his members in the provincial committee have been making derogatory statements towards the leadership, Kamba said: “Of course there are some who are being mentioned and we are going to look at the evidence, yah, when those issues are brought before the disciplinary committee or the central committee. Of course if they have evidence they are going to put it on the table. As at now I can’t say I am agreeing or I am not agreeing, no. I can’t be a complainant and at the same time a judge, no.”
