Musole needs support following forgettable WAFCON outing

Under-17 Coach Carol Kanyemba says Zambia national team goalkeeper Ngambo Musole needs all the support she can get after a forgettable end to the 2025 WAFCON following the deluge of goals she conceded in the 5-0 quarterfinal loss to Nigeria.

Musole was Zambia’s first-choice goalkeeper at the WAFCON in Morocco where she stood in for Catherine Musonda who was reportedly not fit enough due to medical reasons.

Kanyemba told SuperSport that she felt the pain Musole was going through after the goalkeeper struggled to find consistency during the WAFCON that ended for Zambia on Friday with a last-eight exit at the hands of the record 9-time African champions.

“It’s a learning phase, a very painful one. I think we need to build her confidence. She’s lost a lot of confidence, considering this number of goals at this stage of the tournament,” Kanyemba said.

“But she needs a lot of things to work on. Her agility mostly is what was coming to the party in that moment. Because if she had a touch on that ball, it would have lost direction.

In the match against Nigeria, Musole conceded more goals than the 4 goals she had shipped in the group stages in a 2-2 draw against Morocco and a 3-2 win over Senegal.

Poor positioning for most of the time has been cited for errors that led to the 9 goals Zambia conceded in their four games played at the WAFCON that completed its semifinal phase yesterday and ends on July 26.

“So communication is very vital. Very vital as a goalkeeper. You look good as a goalkeeper if you’re able to position your defenders very well,” said Kanyemba.
