Community Action Against Corruption (CAAC) says it has no confidence in the newly appointed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) board as they will help perpetuate the current system of biased and politically inclined corruption.
Last week, President Hakainde Hichilema appointed a new board, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Evans Hamaundu, and Daphne Chabu as Director General, subject to National Assembly Ratification.
The new five-member board of the ACC would replace the Musa Mwenye led board that was dissolved following grave corruption allegations raised at the ACC and state chambers by then board member and commissioner Dr Obrien Kaaba.
But CAAC company executive director Brighton Tembo said in an interview yesterday that he had no confidence in the appointees because of their background.
“We have no confidence in the newly appointed ACC board and the director general, because of the background of some of the appointees,” he said.
“We have a lot of reservations about the new Anti Corruption Commission board chairperson retired Judge Evans Hamaundu, whom we feel will just help to perpetuate the current system of biased and politically inclined corruption fight currently obtaining at ACC,” he said.
Tembo advised people championing the fight against corruption to stop praising the newly appointed board before seeing their competency and performance at ACC.
He said people should stop the tendency of overating newly appointed staff and end up being disappointed.
“As Zambians, we have a tendency of praising and overating people when they are appointed at ACC, but in most cases, we end up getting disappointed from the very people we highly praised and over rated,” he said.
Tembo said the community would closely monitor the performance of the appointees in tackling corruption cases in the country.
