North-Western Province permanent Secretary Colonel Grandson Katambi says First Quantum Minerals (FQM) disbursement of over K3.4 million in grants to 13 cooperatives under the Tujipamo Multi-Purpose Project is a significant step towards empowering local communities.
Speaking at the grant disbursement ceremony for the Tujipamo Multi-Purpose Project in North-Western Province yesterday, Katambi said the initiative reflected a shared commitment to enhancing livelihoods and supporting resilient cooperatives for sustainable long-term development.
He highlighted the importance of using the grants effectively, stating that each Kwacha represented the hopes and aspirations of not just the beneficiaries’ families but the entire community.
“Let us ensure these funds create meaningful and lasting change,” Katambi stated.
According to www.langmead.com, Kansanshi Mining commercial manager Stuart Griffiths noted that FQM had a strong track record of investing in community development projects in Zambia, demonstrating its dedication to corporate social investment, particularly in supporting small and medium enterprises.
He revealed that the grant allocation process was rigorous, with five cooperatives that demonstrated consistent business development receiving over K382,000 each, while the remaining eight received half this amount as they worked towards meeting key performance indicators.
“Our goal is not just to provide resources but to build platforms for wealth and job creation, ensuring economic resilience for years to come,” Griffiths stated.
“We are committed to making a positive impact in the communities we operate in,” he added.
Griffiths noted that with over K6 million distributed this year alone, FQM remained steadfast in its mission to support local enterprises, strengthen the economic fabric of North-Western Province and foster a brighter and more sustainable future for Zambia.
Solwezi Mayor Remmy Kalepa acknowledged FQM’s efforts to empower communities around its areas of operations, noting that the company aligned with the government’s own efforts through CDF.
Kalepa called for continued collaboration between stakeholders for continued smooth mining operations, and community-centric development in line with the Department of Community Development policies and initiatives with regards to the socio-economic empowerment of local communities.
Chief Kapijimpanga of Solwezi District urged beneficiaries to honor their commitments by following the submitted proposals.
“With dedication, the grants have the capability of not only transforming their lives but also uplifting the community,” stated chief Kapijimpanga.
