MMD leader pastor Nevers Mumba says it is worrying that opposition members have resorted to spreading misinformation out of desperation.
And pastor Mumba said Zambians were being served on lies by a relentless group of individuals who felt threatened by many things including the nearness of the 2026 general.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the UPND secretariat in Lusaka, pastor Mumba said a number of politicians had decided to start a war at the beginning of the constitutional debate, claiming they had a document of the proposed amendments.
Pastor Mumba, who is also a member of the UPND Alliance, said the country was facing a “war against lies” propagated by the opposition.
“Zambia is at war, a relentless war between good and evil, a war between truth and lies. This space had been dominated, especially social media, has been dominated by poison and lies,” he said. “The claimed some of the amendments were that President Hichilema was going to remove the 50+1 clause. They also claimed that the amendments were also aimed at removing the running mate clause and many other false claims.”
Pastor Mumba said victims of lies were the people of Zambia who were on social media, believing everything they read and voted based on false information, and cried for the next five years.
He said he expected the politicians who lied to the people to apologise.
Dr Mumba said the enemies of the people had a motive but were desperate that they were running out of time.
“I have been in politics for 28 years, I have approached many elections and good politicians in the country know that elections are around the corner, and a lot of political leaders feel totally unprepared. So the only thing left is to fight and be dirty in order to obstruct what is coming,” he said
Dr Mumba said the opposition knew that unless a miracle happened, they did not stand a chance of winning the next elections.
He encouraged the media to continue exposing the Patriotic Front’s economic mismanagement, which had led to the current suffering among the people.
“I’m really upset about it, that’s why I’m talking about detractors. What is really so difficult to some people to tell the truth? They want to convince Zambians that HH has destroyed the economy. This was committed by the PF,” he said.
He said the President’s job had been to pull the economy from the dungeon of despair but it, but some Zambians had begun to believe that the current crisis was caused by the UPND who had been in power for three years.
Pastor Mumba said criminals were being hailed as saints while saints were looking like criminals.
“Let me warn the media team, keep telling the history so that they keep reminding us. They are lying so that people are submerged in misinformation and when they go to the ballot they are going to use misinformation to make their decision. They are propagandists, they did it with MMD. Some of these people ran our party into a crushing defeat in 2011. Evil always seems to move faster than good even the people who were responsible for the crisis become saints,” he said
Pastor Mumba who endorsed President Hichilema for the 2026 General elections, called on the Church and Civil Society Organisations to support the President in his bid for re-election in 2026.
“President Hichilema must be supported because he has shown true leadership, especially in difficult times when the country went through challenges such as the prolonged drought that resulted in load-shedding and food shortages across the country,” said pastor Mumba. “We encourage those opposing amendments to read before making statements.”
