In the complex landscape of contemporary politics, opposition alliances serve as vital counterweights to entrenched ruling parties.
Their success, however, hinges not merely on shared goals, but significantly on the cohesion among their constituent parties and leaders. Without a unified front, opposition alliances risk fragmentation, diluted influence, and missed opportunities to effect meaningful change.
Unity is often touted as the key to challenging entrenched existing power structures and hegemony. Unfortunately, internal squabbles and petty disagreements have the potential to significantly undermine the effectiveness and credibility of any opposition political party or a coalition of parties in an alliance. Such infighting not only distract them from the core issues facing the electorate but also risk alienating voters who seek a cohesive alternative to the ruling establishment.
Over the past weeks or so, Zambians have witnessed petty conflicts in the Tonse Alliance. These internal conflicts often stem not necessarily from ideological differences or disagreements, but largely from petty leadership struggles. Petty squabbles of who should be what, and who should not be what! While healthy debate is essential in any democratic movement, persistent discord lead to fragmentation, weakening any opposition political party or an alliance’s bargaining power and public appeal.
The Tonse Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties, was initially hailed as a promising force capable of ushering in political change. However, incessant internal conflicts within the alliance have begun to undermine its effectiveness and credibility.
These internal disagreements have sown seeds of discord among coalition partners, threaten to erode public confidence, weaken the alliance’s united front, and diminish its electoral prospects. When opposition groups appear divided, voters begin to perceive them as unstable and/or unprepared to govern, benefiting the incumbent government.
Moreover, these internal strife are already distracting the alliance from focusing on critical national issues such as the high cost of living, high cost of fuel, continued load shedding, escalating poverty levels, social development among many other challenges Zambians are going through. These petty internal conflicts further provide an opportunity for the ruling United Party of National Development (UPND) to capitalize on divisions, further entrenching its position.
For the Tonse Alliance to realize its potential and effectively challenge the status quo, it must prioritize internal cohesion, transparent communication, and a shared vision for Zambia’s future. Failure to do so risks diminishing the alliance’s influence and delaying meaningful progress for the nation. We urge them to emphasise common interests over individual or factional agendas if they are to position themselves for a more unified front capable of meaningful change. Overcoming their internal divisions remains crucial for them to present a credible, compelling challenge to the status quo and to genuinely represent the aspirations of the over 20 million Zambians.
Time is ticking! Petty conflicts in Tonse Alliance must serve as a cautionary tale of the importance of unity in political opposition. Only through genuine spirit of oneness and collective resolve can they hope to bring about positive change in the country now and in the future.
