The UPND have accused police of trying to block opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema’s entrance into Eastern Province after unleashing teargas canisters on his motorcade in Malambo this morning.
UPND Eastern provincial chairperson Johabi Mtonga told Daily Revelation that the UPND were peaceful, but from nowhere police started firing teargas on them as they were driving from the airport in Mfuwe International Airport, where they had gone to welcome Hichilema.
“Everything was okay, peaceful. After we started off from the airport from receiving our president the police as usual started firing the canisters, but we managed to pass through the teargas and are now on our way to Lundazi. People of Mambwe are very peaceful,” Mtonga said.
Efforts to talk to the police have so far yielded no fruit as police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo, who did not take the call only sent a text message advising that queries be referred to her deputy Danny Mwale.
Mwale could not respond to the call also as he was reportedly busy.
Hichilema has posted the whole teargas incident to his Facebook page.
