Energy Regulation Board (ERB) Public Relations Manager, Namukolo Kasumpa, says the ERB has invited the public to share their views on ZESCO’s emergency tariff application, aimed at addressing the current power deficit.
In a press statement released today, Kasumpa underscored the ERB’s commitment to transparency, stating, “The ERB is committed to transparency and stakeholder engagement in our decision-making process. We encourage the public to participate in the hearing and share their input on ZESCO’s proposed tariff adjustments.”
The proposed tariff adjustments, submitted by ZESCO, include maintaining the current tariff for domestic consumers using 200 units and below, while reducing the tariff for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) during the emergency period. The goal is to encourage energy efficiency and protect low-income households and small businesses.
The ERB declared an emergency in April due to ZESCO’s inability to meet national electricity demand, citing external factors beyond the utility’s control. The board is now seeking public input to ensure a fair balance between customer interests, ZESCO’s needs, and the public at large.
A public hearing is scheduled for August 21st at Mulungushi Conference Center in Lusaka, and the ERB will make its decision after considering stakeholder feedback.
“The ERB is mindful of the impact of the power crisis on the economy and households. We urge the public to actively participate in the hearing and provide valuable insights that will inform our decision,” Kasumpa stated.
Kasumpa further stated that the ERB’s primary objective was to ensure that the interests of all stakeholders were protected.
“We will carefully consider all submissions and feedback received during the hearing before making a decision on ZESCO’s emergency tariff application,” stated Kasumpa.
