Veteran politician Dr. Vernon Mwaanga has urged South African political leaders to put aside their differences and form a Government of National Unity (GNU) following the country’s inconclusive general elections on May 29.
In a statement yesterday, Dr. Mwaanga, a respected political and diplomatic commentator, noted that the elections resulted in a historic loss for the African National Congress (ANC), which saw its support plummet to 40 percent from 58 percent in 2019.
He stated that the breakaway uMukhonto We Sizwe (MK) party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, and the Democratic Alliance (DA) made significant gains, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) lost some ground.
With no party able to govern alone under the proportional representation system, Dr. Mwaanga emphasized the need for compromise and unity.
“South African leaders must put party and personal interests aside and form a GNU for the sake of their country and people,” he stated.
Dr Mwaanga stated that as the 7th National Assembly convenes tomorrow to elect a Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and President, Dr. Mwaanga called for unity to take center stage.
His appeal comes with a sense of urgency, as the country navigates uncharted political territory.
