‎Regional consideration must play no role in the August 13, 2026 elections

‎Veteran journalist Frank Mutubila Frank Mutubila has congratulated the people of Northern Province for reminding Zambia of what it can and should be following their voting in the Kasama mayoral by-elections which resulted in the UPND victory.

‎In his recent observations, Mutubila stated that the people’s actions stood as a moral statement to the rest of the country, a clarion call that national consciousness must rise above narrow loyalties.

‎”Some will insist this cannot happen in certain provinces. Others will argue it will not happen in August. That resistance itself reveals how deeply the problem runs. The truth is painful, but it must be spoken, because a nation cannot heal from a wound it refuses to acknowledge,” stated Mutubila. “Zambia is divided. Tribalism sits at the centre of that division. It breeds suspicion, resentment, exclusion and quiet hatred. It turns neighbours into rivals, citizens into strangers and politics into a contest of surnames rather than ideas. It rewards mediocrity when it wears the right identity and punishes excellence when it does not. In doing so, it kills merit, destroys trust and poisons national cohesion.”

‎The observations made by Mutubila need serious reflection by all as the country heads into the August 2026 general elections.

‎We are of the view that candidates; be it presidential, their running mates, members of parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and councillors, must be voted on based on their character and substance of their minds as opposed to which region the presidential candidate is coming from.

‎It has been a very sad lesson to notice that for some, the consideration for voting is based firstly on the candidates contesting on the party representing the presidents and where they hail from,  without realising the harmful effects of the same, where slowly the nation’s unity and cohesion was being eaten into. The effect of this was that instead of prioritising policy moves that would speak to the socio and economic problems the people are facing, some people were now embracing the practice of entering into regional arrangements that would give them a better chance of amassing enough votes from their regions to make up for the numbers elsewhere.

‎If President Hakainde Hichilema will be voted upon, let him be voted upon based on his achievements and the promises he’s giving to continue upon if he is re-elected. And if Given Lubinda or Chishimba Kambwili, Makebi Zulu, Brian Mundubile, Harry Kalaba, Fred M’membe, or the other politicians offering themselves to lead will be voted for, let them be voted for because of the substance of their promises as opposed to the regions they hail from.

‎Even when picking their running mates, the motivation should be based on the the substance of their potential running mates brains, as opposed to how much regional appeal they will accrue to the presidential candidate and their political parties.

‎We can’t be a nation that should be identified with regional entrenchments, but one which is truly living the One Zambia One Nation Motto.
