Agriculture Climate Action Foundation executive director Dr Oliver Kandela Bulaya says the recently launched Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility will impact positively in empowering farmers and boosting agricultural production levels in the country.
In an interview, Dr Bulaya, observed that the credit facility was instrumental in providing farmers with the necessary inputs to enhance their productivity and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
“The Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility is a vital tool in supporting and uplifting farmers by providing them with access to credit for procuring essential inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and later machinery and equipment. This facility can open up opportunities for them to invest in their agricultural activities, increase productivity, and improve their livelihoods,” Dr Bulaya explained.
Dr. Bulaya noted that the Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility will not only significantly contribute to food security, but will also open up avenues for income generation activities, not only among farmers; but in communities as well.
He said empowering farmers with access to credit had numerous benefits in that it enabled them to adopt modern farming techniques, enhance the quality of their produce, and increase their overall yield.
“This not only contributes to food security but also opens up avenues for income generation and economic growth within rural communities,” Dr Bulaya said. “Additionally, the facility encourages the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, promoting long-term environmental conservation and resilience.”
He further said the Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility played a vital role in reducing the vulnerability of farmers to external factors such as climate change and market fluctuations.
Dr Bulaya said by providing financial support, the facility enabled farmers to mitigate risks, invest in climate-smart agriculture, and adapt to changing environmental conditions.
He said this, in turn, fostered agricultural sustainability and ensured the long-term viability of farming operations.
The agricultural expert said the credit facility served as a powerful tool in bridging the gap between farmers and financial resources, enabling them to unlock their full potential and contribute significantly to the agricultural sector’s growth.
Dr Bulaya however, pointed out that there were still some teething problems in the Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility in order to ensure its effectiveness and success.
He also said it was crucial for the government to devise comprehensive capacity building programmes for farmers in order for beneficiaries to appreciate and effectively utilise the newly launched Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility.
Fr Bulaya further explained that his organisation would encourage the continued support to initiatives, such as the Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window Facility, adding that the challenges faced with the Sustainable Agriculture Credit Window could be overcome by putting in place right strategies, with right actions and, at the right time.
