Zambia’s former Ambassador to Malawi and Botswana Milton Phiri has died.
Those familiar with the matter have told Daily Revelation that the former diplomat died from a stroke this afternoon in Chipata General Hospital.
Amb Phiri served as ambassador during second Republican president Frederick Chiluba’s tenure. He was recalled during the tenure of late president Levy Mwanawasa but was reappointed into the foreign service by late president Michael Sata as First Secretary (Administration). However, Amb Phiri was recalled by the same president in 2013.
Amb Phiri campaigned for the UPND during the 2021 general elections. He is widely known as someone who raised national debate prior to the tense 2011 elections between incumbent Rupiah Banda and then opposition PF leader Sata, when he raised questions of the former’s nationality.
This is the second death in consecutive days involving diplomats who served together in South Africa, following the death of Mungongi Samutete who passed away yesterday in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). Samutete was still serving as First Secretary (Protocol) at the Embassy in South Africa at the time of his demise.
